For various soccer events in Berlin, such as the DFB Cup final or DFB international matches, many helping hands are needed in addition to the full-time employees of the Berlin Football Association. In order to be prepared for the growing organizational requirements, the BFV relies on the support of volunteers. These volunteers ensure that major sporting events run smoothly with great motivation and even greater commitment.
In principle, anyone who has reached the age of 18 and is therefore an adult can become a volunteer.
Ideally, the following requirements should also be met:
Flexibility in terms of working at weekends or during the week if required
A strong identification with the sport and soccer in particular
A friendly and helpful demeanor at all times
A high level of commitment and dedication
The willingness and flexibility to take on new challenges
Tip: The volunteer positions are also ideal for students who would like to gain practical experience in the sports industry as part of their studies.
Of course, all volunteers are prepared for their specific tasks, and then it's a case of "in the thick of it instead of just being there"! Possible areas of work can be found below.
Depending on their talent, experience, availability and skills, volunteers can be active in the following areas, for example:
Press & Media
Clearing point & ticket deposit
Accreditation
logistics
Hospitality support
Visitor and guest services (wayfinding, ushering, general stadium services)
Photographic support for the volunteer project
Team support
The BFV usually requires volunteers for the DFB Cup final and DFB international matches at the Olympiastadion Berlin.
A detailed description of the areas of work there can be found in the fold-out element below.
DFB events in the Olympic Stadium
Accreditation
The DFB will set up an accreditation center in the area of the Reiterstadion. This is where the first task of this exciting area begins. Accreditations are normally issued from matchday minus four. All persons who have a task in the stadium area as part of DFB events will be accredited in advance and must collect their accreditations before the start of the match.
The volunteers will check the data of the persons, note the collection accordingly and of course also hand out the accreditations to the individual persons.
Note: The period of deployment is from matchday minus five days until matchday. Two shifts are expected.
Support for the disabled
Assistance for wheelchair users/visually impaired persons in finding their block or seat. Wheelchair users can access the stadium via the middle gates at the east and south gates and can go to their club's block, where special seats for wheelchair users are available (see ticket). Visually impaired persons also have the opportunity to receive a hearing aid, which will be handed out in block A (block for the visually impaired). Volunteers will assist in handing out the devices.
Clearing point
Primarily serves as a contact point for questions at the entrance or problems with tickets. A clearing point is installed at the east and south gates. As there are often problems with tickets and the associated admission and guests are therefore quite tense, tact is required in this area.
Admission management
The "admission management" area will be located at both Südtorplatz and Osttorplatz in front of the stadium. Volunteers will check the "no bag policy" before the admission procedure and guests with larger backpacks and bags (larger than A4, template will be provided) will be actively approached. The "no bag policy" will be communicated in advance, but volunteers should nevertheless remain friendly. Furthermore, tickets should be checked for authenticity before entering the queues (using technical devices). Volunteers and security staff work closely together here.
Maifeld
Approx. 3,600 guests of honor will be catered for on the Maifeld (large VIP tent). When entering and leaving the Maifeld area, accreditation must be checked in and out each time, with the volunteers providing support. In addition, around 80 buses with VIP guests will be parked on the Maifeld (access via the Reiterstadion). In addition to a friendly greeting and a welcome to Berlin, the volunteers, in consultation with the DFB coordinator, will obtain information about the individual buses, such as destination, departure time, etc., and then hold this information for the guests after the game. They may also assist with the positioning of the buses on the Maifeld after consultation.
Note: Working time on match day until approx. midnight.
Media/Press
The following tasks are to be carried out in the press area: Supporting and informing journalists in the press stands, handing out photographer's shirts, supporting the press conferences and distributing the team line-ups promptly and quickly before the start of the final match. Journalists in the press box will be greeted, assisted with questions and problems and provided with all the information they need. In addition, the accredited photojournalists will be issued with appropriate bibs in the marathon gate, support will be provided in setting up the mixed zone and, if necessary, assistance will be provided in looking after the photographers at the award ceremony.
Note: Working hours on match day until approx. midnight.
Seating instructions opposite and main stand, east curve
Stadium guests who have access to these blocks will receive the service of ushering. They will be welcomed by the volunteers and provided with information about their seats. Depending on the block and the crowds, this is done either by actually accompanying the guests to their seats or by directing them to other volunteers or by showing them the correct position of their seats. This is decided by the volunteers depending on the situation. Particular attention should be paid to accompanying older visitors. In these areas, guests have paid a very high ticket price, so it is important that positive and convincing service is offered to guests in this area.
Special tasks
Counter support at the DFB Hotel:
At the DFB Hotel, two volunteers will staff the DFB counter at the hotel entrance and issue deposited tickets for DFB guests of honor. The guests will always be greeted in a friendly manner, handed the deposited tickets and provided with as much further information as possible. The counter will be manned on the day before the final and on match day. Experience in dealing with VIP guests would be desirable.
Photo/video volunteer:
Documentation of the volunteer project through pictures or videos; transmission of the pictures/videos to the volunteer manager; transfer of the picture and video rights to the BFV/DFB.
Beverage distribution at the marathon gate:
The various participants in the supporting program (run-in children, ball children, flag bearers) already have rehearsals the day before, during which the first distribution takes place and everything is rehearsed for the big performance on the final day.
Logistics:
Logistical journeys and deliveries as part of the volunteer project and for the numerous groups in the preliminary and supporting program.
Speaker at the entrance gate:
A speaker will be needed at both the east and south gates for the announcements at the entrance areas. The texts for the announcements will be provided. Nevertheless, the volunteer in this area should not be afraid to read out announcements loudly and clearly (all in consultation with the security service).
Support/coordination in the supporting program:
The children and groups involved must of course be coordinated so that everyone stays together, as the excitement at such a major event is incredibly high. To ensure that everything runs smoothly on the day of the event, rehearsals take place the day before, where we also need support from the volunteers. This is the only way to guarantee that you know the exact procedure on the day of the event.
Jumper team
The team of jumpers is very important for the flexibility of the entire project. In the course of a major event, new requirements for individual areas arise time and again. Other volunteer areas can request the support of the jumping team, as can individual DFB employees. Tasks that have already been defined include Setting up and dismantling a street soccer facility on the Olympic pitch, looking after the drivers' lounge, providing support inside the stadium (including looking after the supporting program (incl. rehearsals)) and organizing the fan farewell on the forecourts.
Lower ring
This position offers volunteers a good opportunity to talk to stadium visitors. Every spectator enters and leaves their block via the Ring area. Volunteers in this area are primarily confronted with all stadium-related issues such as block access, sanitary facilities, etc. They must be prepared to answer their questions in large crowds. Due to the high and often recurring contact due to their positions, the volunteers can create a positive image of the project among the spectators. The volunteers will always be deployed outside the blocks. Despite the assigned area, they should be able to move around flexibly and be available to the spectators for questions and discussions.
Volunteer Center
Coordination of the organizational processes on the premises of the volunteer project and control of deliveries from Aramark and the SCC. The Volunteer Center will be responsible for the following tasks: Handing out packed lunches, serving soft drinks, managing keys (including changing rooms), observing cleanliness and tidiness (possibly addressing volunteers) and handing out and pre-assembling volunteer clothing. In the break room (PK room in the Olympiastadion Berlin), similar tasks will be carried out on the evening of the match day. The volunteers will also prepare the start of the after-work event after the volunteer assignment (including handing out certificates). The tasks will be coordinated in close cooperation with the volunteer management.
