This year's school tournament has found its winners. Once again, the boys and girls had a lot of fun.
Germany's largest indoor football tournament for elementary school has two happy winners: the Evangelische Schule Pankow with its girls' team and the boys' team from the Grundschule am Eichenwald secured the 2019 title today in the 45th edition of the Commerzbank Drumbo Cup in Berlin. Over 1,000 enthusiastic spectators created a wonderful atmosphere at the final tournament in the Sporthalle Charlottenburg.
In addition to the trophy and a gold medal, both winning teams received a voucher for a training day at the Berlin Football Association's (BFV) regional training center at Wannsee.
The silver medals went to the girls' team from Fichtelgebirge Primary School and the boys' team from Richard Primary School. Third place went to Homer-Grundschule for the girls and Grundschule am Falkplatz for the boys.
As is tradition, the German Olympic Association also awarded the Fair Play Prize. The pupils from Löwenzahn Primary School and Thalia Primary School were delighted to receive this very special award. It was presented to them by Heike Drechsler and Renate Bartsch, wife of the late Drumbo Cup founder Hans-Jürgen Bartsch.
5,000 euros for school sports in Berlin
Jana Kubach, Branch Manager Private and Corporate Clients Commerzbank Berlin, handed over a cheque for 5,000 euros to Tillman Wormuth from the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family at the official award ceremony in aid of Berlin school soccer.
"The 45th Berlin Commerzbank Drumbo Cup has been played out: our congratulations go to all of this year's Drumbo Cup winning teams and schools! And all the other Cup participants also played some super exciting soccer. Once again this year, we were able to experience top sporting performance, fair play and lots of fun at first hand. And we were able to observe how real talent emerged from the young players. First and foremost, it is our Drumbo Cup kids who have made the tournament great in 45 years! So thank you to all the teams, parents and teachers, as well as the helpers for so much commitment, fairness and performance on and off the pitch. We are therefore particularly pleased to announce the 46th Cup in 2020. Commerzbank remains the proud organizer and sponsor of this traditional Berlin tournament," said Jana Kubach after the award ceremony.
The Senator for Education, Youth and Family, Sandra Scheeres, was delighted with the winning teams and praised the commitment of all those involved: "The Drumbo Cup has a special significance among school sports events in Berlin. This is shown by the high number of participating teams and the atmosphere at the tournaments in the Charlottenburg sports hall with many enthusiastic spectators. The highly motivated players demonstrate team spirit and fair play as well as sporting ability and ambition. In this way, the Drumbo Cup strengthens fundamental social skills. I would like to thank the teachers who, in their role as soccer supervisors, have organized more than 100 tournaments as part of the Drumbo Cup, and the Berlin Football Association, which actively supports the event. I would also like to thank Commerzbank, whose long-standing and reliable commitment is the cornerstone of this outstanding tournament."
"Fair play, tolerance and the will to perform"
Gerd Liesegang, Vice President of the Berlin Football Association, is also delighted with the generous donation from the main sponsor for school soccer and says of the 45th edition of the tournament: "The Drumbo Cup has become an integral part of Berlin sport. Values such as fair play, tolerance, respect and the will to perform are writ large here. Even the youngest players can be great role models. My thanks go to Commerzbank, all the teachers, the committed helpers and the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family for their dedicated work. We as the Berlin Football Association are proud and happy to be able to contribute to this tournament every year."
383 Berlin teams had registered for the 45th Drumbo Cup. 287 boys' teams and 96 girls' teams from 296 Berlin schools competed in the Drumbo Cup this season.
Berlin soccer tradition
Over four decades, the Drumbo Cup has developed into Germany's largest indoor football tournament for primary school pupils. Well over 100,000 pupils have taken part in the Drumbo Cup since 1975, including real soccer greats such as Jerôme and Kevin-Prince Boateng, Pierre Littbarski, Thomas Häßler and Christian Ziege.
