In front of 700 spectators, the teams from Rosa Parks Primary School and Phorms Primary School came out on top in the girls' and boys' competitions respectively.

As patron of the anniversary edition, Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner presented the awards to the winners. In his welcoming address, he emphasized the great importance of the tournament: "The Sparki Cup is something very special for Berlin: for 50 years, children have been coming together to play soccer and have fun together. This has developed into Europe's largest indoor football tournament for elementary school, grammar schools and community schools up to sixth grade, with around 100,000 participants to date. This impressive number shows how important the Sparki Cup is for the diversity of our city. Sport brings people together, strengthens friendships and conveys values such as respect and fairness. This tournament stands for all of this and I am delighted to be the patron of this great event."

Katharina Günther-Wünsch, Senator for Education, Youth and Family, was delighted with the winning teams and praised the commitment of everyone involved: "The Sparki Cup maintains a wonderful tradition that not only promotes the joy of exercise and sport, but also conveys important values such as team spirit, fairness and discipline. It really is a pleasure to see how so many young people have become enthusiastic about soccer over the last 50 years and have become part of this vibrant school football culture. I would like to thank everyone who makes this event possible year after year - the schools, the teachers, the volunteers and the committed partners. The Sparki Cup shows how sport can strengthen young people as part of their education and, by joining forces, create a positive environment for social interaction."

Supporting program inspires spectators

In addition, various hands-on activities provided a colorful supporting program. Hertha BSC, Union Berlin and Delay Sports contributed to the success of the tournament with creative activities. I would therefore like to thank everyone who contributed to this year's Sparki Cup, which many, especially the children, will remember for a long time."

Berliner Sparkasse, which has supported the tournament as a partner since this edition, was also present in the Sömmeringhalle with its mascot and namesake "Sparki". "The Sparki Cup is more than just a soccer tournament. It stands for team spirit, fair play and young people's enthusiasm for sport. In order to qualify for the final day of the anniversary edition of the Sparki Cup (formerly the Drumbo Cup), Berlin's school teams have been competing in exciting duels over the past few weeks. All Berlin elementary school, community schools and grammar schools up to sixth grade are eligible to play in Europe's largest indoor tournament of its kind. Eight schools qualified

Six preliminary rounds were played in the girls' competition in January. The final rounds followed in March. The winners of these final rounds - Athene Primary School, Rosa Parks Primary School, Richard Primary School and Reinhardswald Primary School - secured a coveted place for the final day of the Sparki Cup.

The boys' finalists first had to prove themselves in the district rounds before the four best school teams were found in the regional rounds. This resulted in the following field of participants: Aziz-Nesin-Grundschule (regional winner north-east), Phorms Grundschule (regional winner north-west), Grundschule am Sandsteinweg (regional winner south-east) and Schele Schule (regional winner south-west) as last year's defending champions.

Girls and boys from each of the four qualifying schools will take it in turns to compete for the title in front of the excited spectators and classmates.

Sparki-Cup: Kai Wegner takes over patronage

The 50th edition of Germany's largest indoor football tournament for elementary school has a prominent supporter: Berlin's Governing Mayor.

Since 1975, Berlin's elementary school, grammar schools and community schools up to Year 6 have been playing in Germany's largest indoor school football tournament. Around 100,000 players have already taken to the field at the Sparki Cup, or its predecessor, the Drumbo Cup - including later professional footballers such as Márton Dárdai and Derry Scherhant or Katja and Dina Orschmann. This year's 50th edition of this school football tradition, organized by the Berlin Football Association (BFV) in cooperation with the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family of the State of Berlin and with the support of Berliner Sparkasse, will be accompanied by another celebrity: Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has taken on the patronage of the anniversary edition of the tournament.

Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin, said: "Football is a great sport that fascinates boys and girls alike. We are delighted to be hosting the biggest school soccer tournament in Berlin - and have been doing so for 50 years. Sport connects and creates encounters - regardless of origin, age, social background or religion. Anyone who plays soccer as a young person learns how important mutual respect, fairness and cohesion are. I was delighted to take on the patronage of this competition for schoolchildren in Berlin. My thanks go to the volunteer organizers and teachers who are committed to this soccer tournament. Good luck and lots of fun to all the footballers!"

Katharina Günther-Wünsch, Senator for Education, Youth and Family: "The Sparki Cup maintains a wonderful tradition that not only promotes the joy of exercise and sport, but also conveys important values such as team spirit, fairness and discipline. It really is a pleasure to see how so many young people have become enthusiastic about soccer over the last 50 years and have become part of this vibrant school football culture. I would like to thank everyone who makes this event possible year after year - the schools, the teachers, the volunteers and the committed partners. The Sparki-Cup shows how sport can strengthen young people as part of their education and, by joining forces, create a positive environment for social interaction."

BFV President Bernd Schultz said: "I would like to thank Kai Wegner for his interest in the Sparki Cup and his commitment to school soccer in Berlin. Thanks to our close cooperation with the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family, we have been able to develop the tournament into a shining example for school sports events throughout Germany. In addition to the joy of exercise, the Sparki Cup conveys important sporting values and inspires not only the participating players, but also entire schools, parents and other interested parties. The assumption of patronage by the Governing Mayor shows that the state of Berlin is thinking about sport as an important part of the education system. We must continue to promote school sport in the future and use its potential to strengthen social cohesion."

49th Drumbo Cup 2024

Winners of the 49th Drumbo Cup crowned

202 boys' and 76 girls' teams took part in the various preliminary rounds of the Drumbo Cup 2024 in recent weeks, with four teams qualifying for the final round on March 20, 2024. The Schöneberg sports hall was the venue for the final day of Europe's largest indoor tournament for elementary school, grammar schools and community schools up to sixth grade. In the 49th edition of the traditional competition, the Schele School won the coveted title for the boys and the Johann Strauss School for the girls in front of around 400 spectators and to thunderous applause from their fellow pupils.

Crowdfunding campaign for the 2024 final day

The winning schools were able to raise a trophy to the roof of the hall and were also presented with medals and certificates. In addition, the best individual players, goal scorers and goalkeepers were awarded attractive prizes, including from BFV premium partner Nike. These were presented by professional footballers Amelie König and Marleen Rohde (Hertha BSC), Paul Jaeckel, Sophie Trojahn and Pia Metzker (1. FC Union) as well as BFV President Bernd Schultz, Dieter Krickow (German Olympic Association) and Uwe Burkhardt (Head of School Football Berlin).

A colorful supporting program with a spectacular show by the Staatliche Artistenschule Berlin during the short breaks in play and a visit by the prominent professional players and mascots of Hertha and Union rounded off the successful final day. Thanks also go to the referees, who officiated the matches impeccably.

This year's tournament was once again organized by the AG Schulfußball of the Berlin Football Association and the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family with the support of Hertha BSC, Union Berlin and Nike. However, holding the event in its usual setting is increasingly presenting the organizing organizations with economic challenges. To compensate for the withdrawal of a long-standing partner, the BFV has therefore launched a crowdfunding campaign this year. Every donation helps to secure the organization of the Drumbo Cup and is rewarded with attractive prizes, such as signed fan merchandise from Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union.

In addition, the competition offers the opportunity to inspire young people to take up club sport.
