B-Juniors: Union Berlin climbs the Cup Olympus
Game picks up speed after storm interruption
The city derby between the U17 teams of 1. FC Union Berlin and Hertha BSC on Ascension Day was to decide who would climb to the top of the Berlin B-Junior Cup. Shortly after kick-off, the Blue & Whites set the tone on their way to the summit when Ali Salman scored the first goal of the game (2nd). For their part, the Iron youngsters had their first attempts on the Hertha goal in the 10th and 14th minutes through Francesco Matjani and Bruno Pliquett respectively.
After a good quarter of an hour, the weather gods had their say: a thunderstorm sweeping across the Sportpark caused a brief interruption to the final and the teams retreated to the dressing rooms. After the enforced break, the god of soccer adjusted the balance of power in the contest between the deities - initially in the person of Hertha's Noah Wosnitza. The eighth-placed player hit the ball from 18 meters right onto the bottom edge of the crossbar and into the net for a 1:0 lead (20th minute).
Union turn the game around in the second half
After Hertha BSC defended their lead until half-time, Union came back onto the pitch with great determination and offense. Shortly after the kick-off of the second half, the Köpenickers scored via the right wing. A low cross from Leonard Sorg was pushed over the line by Mark Lenn Schippeinz, who was standing in the five-yard box, to make it 1:1 (49'). But that was not all: a short time later, the Iron youngsters turned the game around completely. In the 55th minute, Mert Badem scored the much-acclaimed opening goal to make it 2:1 (55').
1. FC Union Berlin was close to the Cup Olympics, but the final steps to the summit proved to be difficult. Francesco Matjani was awarded a penalty in the 66th minute to decide the game, but missed. Mayson Grothe almost equalized for Hertha on the direct counter-attack. In the final phase, the Blue & Whites went on the attack once more, but were unable to equalize. Hertha goalkeeper Lennox Ballwanz had the very last opportunity to do so in the final minute of stoppage time, but his header did not find its way into the net.
It remained 2:1 for 1. FC Union Berlin, who climbed the cup Olympus and lifted the trophy into the now blue sky. Winning goalscorer Mert Badem was also named "Man of the Match". "The coach motivated us at half-time to give it our all again," said Badem in the BFV interview after the game. "That's why we won."
The BFV would like to thank the finalists and the team of referees, the organizing team of the youth committee and all other helpers and supporters who made this final of the Nike Youth Cup B-Juniors unforgettable for everyone involved.
