Team Berlin Takes Three Spots on the Oldies' Podium
Berlin Teams on the Small Field
The capital was represented in all four competition divisions this year. As a result, there was almost always something for Berlin fans to cheer about at Hueppeplatz, where, among other events, the two small-field tournaments were held.
In the Over-50s competition, TSV Mariendorf took the field; the team had sensationally earned its spot in the tournament at the NOFV Championships, and simply competing at the DFB level was a highlight in itself. Unfortunately, the valiant South Berliners were not able to secure a victory. With a draw against SC Preußen Lengerich, they finished in fifth place.
At the same time, the over-32 women’s team from Türkiyemspor Berlin was also battling for the title. The Kreuzberg squad, led by former Bundesliga star Zsanett Jakabfi, went into the decisive day of the tournament with two wins in two games. After a loss to the eventual champions, 1. FC Riegelsberg, as well as a series of missed chances and a second defeat against TSV Neckarau, they ultimately secured the bronze medals.
Hertha BSC is the German Champion
In the men’s over-32 and over-40 divisions, Team Berlin was represented by Hertha BSC in both categories. In the over-32 division, the team—featuring former pros Solomon Okoronkwo and Marvin Knoll—started the tournament with three draws and had already secured the bronze medal before the final match. In that match against 1. FC Wunstorf—who had already clinched the championship—it looked for a long time as though Hertha would secure a victory, but after conceding two goals, Hertha’s fourth game also ended in a draw.
The over-40 tournament delivered the thrilling showdown that all fans had been hoping for! Here, Hertha BSC, the league leaders, faced off against 1. FC Nürnberg, their closest pursuers tied on points after three wins each in three games, in the final match. An early goal by FCN and a later goal by former pro Sebastian Glasner weren’t enough for the Franconians against the star-studded Hertha squad featuring Sami Allagui, Karim Benyamina, and Halil Savran: The Blue-and-Whites beat former St. Pauli goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner three times and secured the German Over-40 Championship with a 3-2 victory!
We congratulate all four Berlin teams on an outstanding performance at the national level and thank all the staff and volunteers, as well as the referees, who contributed to two magnificent days of competition!
