Union Berlin celebrates at the German Futsal Championships
B-junior girls celebrate title defense
Four games, four wins, 18:6 goals: The record of the U17s of 1 FC Union at the German Futsal Championships for B-Juniors is impressive. After a narrow 4-3 win in the opening game against their eventual final opponents VfR SW Warbeyen, the Köpenick-based side went into a frenzy over the course of the tournament and deservedly repeated their title win from the previous year. After victories against GVO Oldenburg (7:2) and Karlsruher SC (1:0), they once again faced Warbeyen's youngsters in the final, who were hardly able to put up any resistance in their second encounter: 6:1 was the final score in a one-sided final.
Union co-coach Liza Grimske was very happy after the tournament: "The girls showed great development throughout the tournament, seemed more and more well-coordinated and improved from game to game. We are incredibly proud of the whole team," she said in a club statement quoted. The individual titles for best player (Amina Charifi) and best goalkeeper (Charmira-Anjali Krawczyk) also went to Köpenick.
Third place for Union's U23 women
1. FC Union also represented TEAM BERLIN at the German Women's Futsal Championships in Duisburg-Wedau. With two draws in the group stage (0:0 against Preußen Münster and 2:2 against 1. FC Riegelsberg), the U23 of the Berlin Bundesliga team entered the semi-finals rather luckily, but had less fortune there. After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, they went into a shoot-out against the eventual champions Futsal Panthers Köln, in which the Köpenickers scored once less and had to put their championship dream to bed. Thanks to a 4:3 win in the final "small final", however, Union were able to celebrate a strong third place. The team had already finished fifth the previous year.
"We wanted to achieve a better result than last year, which we did. The players demanded everything from the pure futsal teams and both came close to losing. Of course, after the unfortunate semi-final defeat, the sadness prevailed for a short time. But now we are happy and also very proud of the result we achieved. The trip under the roof of the hall was intense and thrilling. We'll be happy to take all the experience with us into the second round," said coach Anja Matthes, according to a club statement.
"Figurehead for women's and girls' soccer in Berlin"
The Berlin Football Association congratulates the U17 and U23 teams of 1. FC Union Berlin on their strong performances at the German Futsal Championships. "We are very proud of the achievements of our Berlin representatives at the DFB Championships," emphasized Nadine Grund, BFV Presidential Member for Women and Girls. "The youngsters of 1. FC Union are figureheads and ambassadors for women's and girls' soccer in Berlin throughout Germany. I would like to congratulate the U17s on defending their title and the U23s on a strong third place and wish both teams every success for the upcoming tasks in the second half of the season!"
