Skills Development, Inclusion, and Connection Through FUSSBALL GRENZENLOS

By the end of 2025, more than 117 million people worldwide were displaced (see UN Refugee Agency). Every day, people leave their homes—not because they want to, but because they are forced to. The World Refugee Day on June 20 honors these people and celebrates their strength, courage, and resilience.

SOCCER WITHOUT BORDERS is a project of the Berlin Soccer Association designed to make it easier for people with refugee backgrounds to participate in soccer. One key strategy for achieving this goal is offering targeted training programs. Nine women and eight men from various countries successfully completed one such program from June 3 to 18, 2026: the FUSSBALL GRENZENLOS Basic Coach Training Course.

During four intensive days of in-person training, the focus was on hands-on learning: Participants not only learned about training sessions but also actively led, reflected on, and refined them themselves. This allowed them to gain valuable practical experience and strengthen their roles as coaches. The course was supplemented by theoretical input and digital learning formats.

The course exemplifies the approach of FUSSBALL GRENZENLOS. The project places a special focus on:

  • Participation: Everyone should have the opportunity to play and get involved
  • Empowerment: People are encouraged to showcase their strengths and take on responsibility
  • Cohesion: Shared experiences build trust and connection

The work of FUSSBALL GRENZENLOS centers on values such as diversity, respect, and solidarity. “We want to show that soccer can be a place where everyone is welcome—regardless of their background, language, or immigration status. This is exactly the approach we conveyed to participants in our Basic Coach program,” explains BFV staff member and project manager Tom Molnár.

FUSSBALL GRENZENLOS is not just about the game itself, but about creating spaces for exchange, settling in, and living together in harmony—all to promote long-term integration, cohesion, and opportunities. Experience from our daily work shows that integration happens through direct interaction both on and off the field.
