Hertha BSC Clinches Cup Victory with a Cool Finish

We had to wait a long time for this match, but on the evening of June 11, the moment finally arrived: Hertha BSC and Frohnauer SC faced off in the final of the Nike Youth Cup for D-Juniors at Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportpark. The FSC had prevailed in the semifinals in both the original match and the rematch that became necessary following an association court ruling, while Hertha had fought their way into the final via a penalty shootout thriller against Tennis Borussia. So everything was set for a high-quality final when referee Heinz Siebart and his crew kicked off the match at 6:30 p.m.

Both teams hit their stride right away

From the opening whistle, both teams left no doubt that they were out to win the cup that evening and rightly count among the best teams in their age group. In a match that was fiercely contested from the start, it was Hertha—the most offensively potent team in the Berlin League—that created the first good scoring chances. Less than four minutes in, Luca Zorn broke through strongly on the right wing and passed into the middle, where Emil Röver’s first-time shot narrowly missed the top corner. Just five minutes later, Leonard Niemeyer, wearing the jersey of the “Old Lady,” took a chance and fired from distance. The long-range shot slammed against the crossbar, leaving the score at 0-0 (9th minute).

Subsequently, league rival and league leader Frohnau also demonstrated its offensive prowess. Moritz-Oliver Radom got a shot off from the center following a strong counterattack and a pass from the right wing, but his attempt sailed just a few centimeters over the crossbar (11th minute). Frohnau had the most dangerous chance of the first half in the 27th minute, when the ball came toward the goal from a free kick in a scramble, but Hertha keeper Purka was able to make the save. Thus, a tight first half with a slight advantage for Hertha ended goalless at halftime.

Frohnau Unlucky, Hertha Clinical

Frohnau came out of the gate like a house on fire in the second half! Within minutes, the North Berliners had enough chances to seal the game early. First, Damian Bade powered his way through on the left, where Christos Karapetian was decisively blocked at the last moment as he went for the finish and ultimately played the ball just wide of the post while lying on the ground (31'). Just a minute later, Moritz-Oliver Radom took a shot from a position slightly to the left, but his powerful strike was saved. Seconds later, Frohnau had another multi-pronged chance to put the ball in the net and take the lead, but there was always a foot in the way before the final shot went just over the goal (32').

The bitter waste of chances from Frohnau’s perspective would soon come back to haunt them in the best soccer cliché fashion: In the 36th minute, Hertha’s Jakob Araz took a shot from the right side; FSC keeper Müller could only parry the powerful strike, and Luca Zorn was in exactly the right place to fire the ball into the net from close range—1-0 for Hertha! With that, the Blue-Whites had the momentum on their side. Less than five minutes later, Emil Röver made a strong run down the left flank, played the ball into the middle, where Zorn was once again completely unmarked and left the Frohnau goalkeeper with no chance—2-0 after 35 minutes!

Frohnau now faced a tough task if they were to win the cup that evening. Giving up, however, was not an option, and so the North Berliners created good chances through Milan Winkler (47th) and Louis Däderich (50th), neither of which found the back of the net. Hertha, on the other hand, was clinical in front of the net in the second half: In the 58th minute, Leonard Niemeyer put the final nail in the coffin with a powerful low shot into the Frohnau net following a precise pass from the left – a 3-0 victory and the Nike Youth Cup title for Hertha BSC’s D-Juniors!

The Berlin Football Association extends its warmest congratulations to Hertha on winning the cup. Congratulations on a strong cup season also go out to Frohnauer SC. In the third and final match of the day, the B-Juniors of Hertha BSC and Viktoria Berlin met. With a few exceptions, most of the action took place in Viktoria Berlin's half of the pitch. While the Hertha BSC team tried to score with an offensive drive, Viktoria Berlin defended everything at the back until the half-time break. After 40 minutes, the first half ended without any goals. Hertha BSC also started the second half on the offensive. In the 48th minute, Hertha's Chapman finally scored to make it 1-0 after Viktoria were unable to clear a corner kick properly. Just three minutes later, Aseko Nkili made it 2-0 with a volley into the far corner. In the 56th minute, a free-kick for Hertha BSC led to another minor scuffle in the Viktoria Berlin penalty area, which was punished with yellow cards. Viktoria Berlin tried to fight their way forward again and forced Hertha goalkeeper Rademacher to make a save outside the penalty area in the 68th minute. Both teams fought to the end and were loudly supported by the stands. At the end of the day, Hertha BSC's B-Juniors were able to celebrate and lift the trophy.
