Berlin's U16 juniors return from the national cup in Duisburg with the bronze medal. With three wins and one defeat, the Berlin team finished in a strong third place. The DFB scouting tournament, also known as the state cup, is the largest nationwide comparison of state selection teams in Germany. Twenty-one state associations take part to determine the best team over four match days. The tournament is also used by the DFB coaches to select players for the German U15 and U16 national teams.
The 16 Berliners born in 2010 and 2011 met last Monday at the Wannsee Sports School for a joint regeneration session, mental preparation for the tournament and the final fine-tuning in individual and small group analyses. On Wednesday, the team finally set off for the tournament venue in Duisburg.
1st game: Berlin 1:7 Bayern
In the first game, the Berliners faced one of the traditional favorites to win the tournament. Bayern tried to put pressure on Berlin's build-up play right from the start, provoking early mistakes that were punished with ice-cold precision. After just a few minutes, the score was 0:3. The Berliners gradually gained more confidence and the game seemed more balanced, especially in the middle, but at the end of the game, the robust Bavarians, who played at a very high level, turned up the heat again and increased their lead. Viola managed to score the equalizer for the Berlin side in the meantime.
2nd game: Berlin 2:1 Hamburg
Berlin only had just under 18 hours to recover from the difficult start to the tournament. The opening phase was characterized by many duels in midfield, with Hamburg gaining the first advantage with a goal after 19 minutes. The Berliners got themselves back into the game in the final phase: Meryem was played free between the lines and passed the ball through to Hannah. She kept her cool from 14 meters and finished into the near corner to make it 1:1. In the final minute, Hannah crossed from Jolica and finished again from the 5-meter area, but was fouled by the Hamburg goalkeeper. Amélie then slotted home the penalty kick to give the Berlin team their first win of the tournament.
Game 3: Berlin 2:1 Bremen
It was déjà vu for the Berlin team in the third game. It took just 55 seconds for Bremen to take the lead after winning the ball early on. In contrast to the first game, however, the setback was quickly dealt with and Berlin continued to create opportunities, while Bremen repeatedly became dangerous, especially down their right flank. Berlin equalized just a few minutes later when Viola snatched the ball from the opposing midfielder and chipped a half-height shot from 20 metres over the goalkeeper to make it 1-1. It was also she who, in the final phase, received the ball on the edge of the penalty area after a remarkable right-footed shot and subsequent left-footed pass from Elina, and volleyed the ball into the far corner to give Berlin a 2:1 victory.
4th game: Berlin 2:1 Brandenburg
The last game of the tournament was a derby with the state association from Brandenburg. Both teams brought a lot of energy onto the pitch, which resulted in a very fast-paced game. Unusually, the Berlin team took the lead: striker Hannah won the ball herself, dribbled towards the goalkeeper and coolly slotted home. Shortly after the half-time break, the Brandenburgers equalized with a header from close range. In the open final phase, Berlin's Michaela broke through on the left wing after a chip ball from Nele - two Berliners missed in the center, but Amélie, who had moved in, was ready at the second post to score the winner.
With three wins from four games, the Berlin team took 9 points with a goal difference of 7:10. With the successful comeback, this means a place on the podium as the third best of 22 teams.
"A reflection of the season"
Association sports coach Falko Grothe: "We are very happy to be able to bring the bronze medal back to Berlin. After a difficult start and two more games that we had to turn around, the team showed real comeback qualities. The players had confidence in themselves, their teammates and what we had planned, remained courageous and showed great determination to win the games. The tournament was therefore a reflection of the season, in which setbacks could always be dealt with positively and were seen as opportunities to grow. The players themselves said during preparation: "We do the impossible". After the start to the tournament, this description pretty much sums up the end result. I think that the experience gained can be an important step in the players' personal development and I am very proud of the way we performed."
"Duisburg is always a highlight for us as players"
Captain Therese: "The scouting tournament in Duisburg is always a highlight for us as players, both individually and as a team. This year, you could see a clear improvement in our performance from game to game, and the final ranking reflects our development in this U16 season."
The players were provided by: 1.FC Union Berlin, FC Nordost, Hertha BSC, Nordberliner SC.
The International Cup was the last joint event for the 2010/2011 age group. While the 2011s will continue to train together until Ascension Day and have a final tournament in Prague, they will then take part in the scouting for the new U16 juniors in the summer. The 2010 cohort, on the other hand, will go straight into the U19 women's national selection, which will be back in action at the West German regional tournament in Duisburg at the end of April.
