Fair play when changing clubs in youth soccer

A young player wants to change clubs or a club is interested in a young player from another club - situations that create potential for conflict in every transfer period. It can also work smoothly if rules of conduct are observed. As an association, we are therefore providing information on the correct and respectful procedure for changing clubs during the upcoming winter transfer window.

Child welfare first and foremost

First and foremost, it should be noted that the welfare and interests of the players always come first. The interests and preferences of parents or guardians should not be a reason for a change of club and the current club should only suggest a change if the player is severely over- or under-challenged. As a general rule, children (up to around the age of 13) should not leave their home club (unless they move house, for example) and short journeys to training or matches should be a high priority.

No direct contact with players

As an association, we appeal to our clubs to refrain from directly approaching children and young people for the purpose of recruiting them under any circumstances, including contacting them via private cell phone numbers and social media accounts. For reasons of respect and child protection, contact must always be made via the youth management of the current club. It is the responsibility of the club to establish contact with the player's legal guardians. A clear "no" in this procedure must always be accepted by all parties involved in the potential transfer.

Changing clubs in the youth sector explained simply

Changes of club must always take place with open communication and respect. If a player wants to change clubs, their legal guardians should arrange a trial training session at a new club and inform their own youth management team. They must accept the children's and young people's wish to change clubs. If a change of club is agreed, the next steps should be discussed with the current club and the legal guardians. Players wishing to transfer should play the current season - or at least the first half of the season in the case of winter transfers - at their current club.
