Volunteering as a guest in the capital

Every year, the "thank you weekends" for the winners of the DFB Volunteer Award take place at different venues. In May 2026, it was once again the turn of the Berlin Football Association to host the event and organize an exciting soccer weekend in the capital for the recipients from Westphalia, Saxony and Berlin.

Berlin soccer up close

After the safe arrival of the award winners, the weekend kicked off on Friday evening with a joint dinner at the Hotel Müggelseeperle. BFV President Bernd Schultz and Berlin's State Honorary Commissioner Ingo Büchner-Fenner warmly welcomed the guests. Afterwards, there was a good exchange in the form of intensive discussions between the award winners and a joint viewing of the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt on television.

On Saturday morning, buses took us to the An der Alten Försterei stadium for the awards ceremony. As the schedules for Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union Berlin matches did not play along, the award winners were given a stadium tour of the men's and women's home ground of the "Eisernen". The hour was filled with information, insights and short stories about the stadium. The award winners were full of praise for the guides.

Special honor

All guests then took their seats in the main stand to receive their awards. A special highlight for all honorees was that they could be seen on the large stadium screen with their personal photo and club name. Vice-President Marianne Finke-Holtz and Gottfried Dennebier, the state honorary officer, presented the awards on behalf of the Westphalia Football and Athletics Association. This was followed by the award winners from Saxony. The awards were presented by Saxony's Vice President and Chairman of the DFB's Volunteer Commission, Jörg Gernhard. Last but not least, BFV President Bernd Schultz and Ingo Büchner-Fenner honored the award winners from Berlin, Gerhard Krause and Frank Tänzler. Christine Lehmann and Ricarda Schuldt were unfortunately unable to attend.

Special thanks go to 1. FC Union Berlin, who contributed to the success of the event with their support.

The afternoon was dedicated to individual leisure activities. Some guests chose to go for a walk near the hotel on Müggelsee, while others visited the beautiful old town of Köpenick. The evening ended with dinner together.

On Sunday morning, the guests set off on their journey home, full of impressions and with many grateful words for their Berlin hosts.
